ETHICS AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURE OF THE CIMG
i. Preamble
- In accordance with Article 3 (particularly) Section 3 of the Constitution of the CIMG:
“To promote and maintain for the benefit of the public high standards of professional skills ability and integrity among persons engaged in marketing products and services”.
- In furtherance of this, the Institute requires its members to recognize their responsibilities to customers (actual and potential), employers, colleagues and fellow marketers and to the public in general. In order to attain the recognition and honoring of such responsibilities the Institute requires all Members to adhere to the Code of Professional Standards set out below, as a condition of membership.
- Where a complaint is made by any person that a member of the Institute has acted in breach of the Code of Professional Standard, the Council has made provision for the determination of that complaint in the manner set out below.
Code of Professional Standards

A member shall at all times conduct himself with integrity and in such a way as not to discredit in the community the profession of marketing or the Institute and to preserve the honour and dignity of the profession.

A member shall not by any unfair or unprofessional practice injure the business, reputation or interests of any other Member or of the Institute

A members shall at all times ach honestly in his dealings with customers and clients (actual and potential), employers and employees.

A member shall not knowingly or recklessly disseminate any false or misleading information, either on his own behalf or on behalf of anyone else

A member shall ensure that he and his employees keep themselves abreast of current marketing practice in their field, and always act competently and diligently

A member shall at all times seek to avoid any conflict of interest both between himself and any business in which he may be involved, and between himself or any business which he may be involved in and his or its customers, clients or employers AND shall make prior voluntary and full disclosure to all parties concerned of all matters that may give rise to any such conflict.

A member shall keep confidential all information concerning:A customer’s or client’s business, save in so far as otherwise permitted by the customer or client or by law;His employer’s business, save in so far as authorized by the employer; AND a member shall not use any such information to his own profit gain or advantage

A member shall not promote or seek to obtain business in an unprofessional or unethical way
- A member shall observe the requirements of all other Codes of Practice which may from time to time have any relevance to the practice of marketing so far as such requirements do not conflict with any provisions of the Code or of the Institute’s Royal Charter and Bye-laws; a list of such Codes being obtainable from the Institute’s head office
- A member shall not hold himself out as having the Institute’s support or approval in connection with any project, activity or matter unless the Institute’s written approval of the specific project, activity or matter has been first obtained
- A member shall at all times ensure that the provisions of Code are brought to the attention of his employees and they comply fully with its provisions
- A member who knowingly causes or permits any other person or organization to be in substantial breach of his Code or who is party to such a breach shall himself be guilty or such breach
- A member shall observe this Code of Professional Standards as it may be expanded and annotated and published from time to time by the Ethics Committee in the manner provided for below
The Disciplinary Committee
If any complaint should be made against any member it shall be considered by the Ethics/Disciplinary/Legal Committee as set out under Article 14 of the constitution
The Procedure for Complaints
- A complaint may be made by any person that a member of the Institute failed to observe the Code of Professional Standards whilst he was a member of the Institute
- Any complaint so made against a member shall be in writing under confidential cover and addressed to the secretary of the Ethics/Disciplinary/Legal Committee. The name and address of the person
